With all its convenience, the iPad will drain a good volume of time in your hands. Other much needed tasks will fall wayward at times, when you find yourself too absorbed with the iPad. To top it all off, there are health consequences that comes with using an iPad in extended periods of time.

What are the Potential Health Problems with iPad Use?

Unfocused Attention. The extent of poor attention span in iPad and tablet users is rising. Whether we admit it or not, a simple notification from this multi-touch device while in a meeting will automatically make lose concentration while in a meeting or while in conversation with someone.

Muscle Aches and Pains. Playing or fiddling around with you iPad for hours on end with little break can put a toll on your neck. You can also get headaches and even muscle pains throughout your body because of constant use of an iPad. Have your iPad at eye level to prevent neck strain and have frequent breaks in between.

Vision Problems. This is the principal health problem in iPad and tablet users. Aside from straining your neck, staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause myopia. Myopia is a condition wherein the eye has a hard time focusing on things that are right in front. The amount of time we blink is also reduced significantly from 15 times per minute, to as much as 5 times in a minute. Blinking is needed to clear out and flush away any microbes or dust that may have lodged in our eyes.

Obesity. Using an iPad definitely encourages inactivity. And inactivity is usually coupled with munching and nibbling on snacks to help pass the time while using an iPad.
These are just the typical problems that plague an iPad user fanatic. There are some parents who let their children or even buy their kids their own iPad at a very young age. This sets them up early exposure to health risks associated with it.

Research and studies have been made that using a tablet at a very young age encourage passivity in young children. There have been Youtube videos of kids as young as one year old that knows how to use an iPad. It may seem very amusing, but the effects are definitely not.

Children are meant to be stimulated with activity to encourage healthy growth of the brain cells and synapses. Letting a child use is akin to letting him or her watch TV all day long, that have been proven to cause obesity issues and push aggressive behavior.

How can we Alleviate any of these Health Problems?

Using an iPad or something similar to an iPad is inevitable. There are ways to lessen the health impacts of prolonged impact use. Here are some simple tips that you can do:

  • Comfortable position your iPad on a table or lap table at least 5 to 40 degrees below your horizontal line of sight
  • Take frequent rest breaks every 10 to 15 minutes
  • Massage your eyelids now and then to help activate tear production
  • Adjust your screen light settings to be 3 times dimmer and brighter than your room
  • Try to get a pair of computer glasses from a reliable optometrist

The iPad does adjust its screen light settings depending on the ambient light, which is one way of it helping reduce the health impact on eye and vision problem that comes with using any tablet device.

The key factor is still moderation and having the knowledge and discipline when something is used too much for their own good.

The new Apple iPad is a wonderful device, but our Body is way more Super than that.
